Garden of Palms, October 2020: Assisted Living and Memory Care in Los Angeles

by Garden of Palms

Please take a moment to get up to date on the good news happening at Garden of Palms.

We work to give our residents the best assisted living experience possible. For us, this means including all the best parts of life into our daily, weekly, and monthly agendas. October puts us in the middle of the High Holidays, including upcoming commemorations of Sukkot and Simchat Torah. These milestones and celebrations are an important part of life for many of our residents, and we faithfully carry out these celebrations.

Through all of the events that our community has experienced this year, we have remain focused on doing the best for our residents. The best assisted living services. The best therapies. The best activities. We’re proud of our residents for remaining strong and we’re proud of our team for their perseverance.

Employee of the Month - Eli

Eli was born and raised in the Oriental Mindoro province of the Philippines. He prizes education, and after finishing High School at the age of 16, he moved to California in 2013 to earn his diploma as a Pharmacy Technician in 2015 from LACC. He has since continued his work and education, graduating with a Liberal Arts Associate’s Degree in Natural Math and Sciences in 2019.

When not working or studying, he enjoys spending time in the comfort of his home, listening to music or watching movies. He loves the horror movie genre, which is apropos as people are getting in the mood for Halloween at the end of the month! Eli loves to travel, and would one day like to travel the world with friends and family. He regularly watches travel videos on YouTube in anticipation of possible trips. During High School he had actually wanted to pursue a career in aviation, as he thought being a pilot would support his travel goals. However, having pursued education in the sciences and having worked in the health field, he has found his passion in nursing. He is planning to pursue his nursing degree beginning in 2021, provided the pandemic slows and schools reopen.

In the meantime, he has been enjoying his work at Garden of Palms, especially the sweet and fun conversations every morning with residents. He loves feeling helpful, and we love having him here. Best wishes in your future education efforts, Eli!

Resident of the Month - Gregory K

Resident of the Month Paul D. Paul was born in the early 40’s, and lived most of his life in Brooklyn, NY. His father worked in the jewelry business, and his mother inspired him by earning her doctorate in her thirties. He has a younger brother Jay, who currently lives in Bethesda, Maryland. Paul went to NYU, and earned his Bachelors in Accounting, then became a CPA. He met and married his first wife, Ruth, in his early twenties. She was a school teacher, and together they had a son, Steven. Sadly, when Ruth was in her mid-thirties, she passed away, which was traumatic for Paul and Steven.

Fortunately, two years later Paul met Gloria through mutual friends. They married and stayed in Brooklyn, NY for twenty years before moving to Ecuador! Paul worked as an accountant for thirty years before transitioning into a second career in real estate in Manhattan for the following thirteen years. After Paul retired, he and Gloria moved to Quito, Ecuador. They stayed for thirteen years before Gloria passed away. He misses Ecuador; particularly practicing golf at a nearby course in the year round sunny climate, learning Spanish and practicing at the local supermarket, enjoying the inexpensive living situation and his favorite drink called “Guitig”, and spending time with fellow expat friends from around the world. His son Steven had moved to Los Angeles when younger to study at USC, and now works as a very successful attorney. He also has blessed Paul with two young grandchildren. Since Steven lives in Venice, CA, he moved Paul out west to California so they could be closer together. Paul is extremely proud of all that Steven has accomplished!

In his spare time, Paul loves listening to classical music. Television didn’t exist when he was growing up, so his parents would always have classical music playing. He continues the tradition, and his favorite composer is Gershwin. Paul has always loved to travel, and has visited South America, Central America, Alaska, Canada, Europe & Israel! His favorite way to challenge his intellectual capabilities at Garden of Palms is through Trivia Challenges, as he loves to exercise his mind. We love having Paul at our community, and thank him for the interesting and varied life experiences he brings to the table!
