Assisted Living: How we create a home for Jewish seniors
by Garden of PalmsSpirituality and religion play a crucial role in retirement for many seniors. Belonging to a religious community provides a sense of meaning and purpose, and it also leads to strong social and spiritual bonds. With these benefits in mind, it’s no wonder many seniors are opting for faith-based retirement communities that integrate and support their cultural preferences, practices, and beliefs.
As a Jewish senior living community in Los Angeles, Garden of Palms understands the nuances of creating a warm, inviting space designed for the Jewish faith. In this article, we take a closer look at how we’ve created our Jewish retirement community.
There’s No Place Like Home
The ideal retirement community should feel like home, and nurturing that sense of comfort and familiarity comes down to the details. From the delicious smell of homemade Jewish breads to the delightful sound of live traditional klezmer music, we pay special attention to every aspect of the senior living experience. The resulting atmosphere is filled with sights, sounds, and smells that celebrate Jewish culture.
Our calendar is filled with a wide variety of stimulating and entertaining activities every month, including everything from jewelry making to magic shows. You’ll find our residents enjoying live concerts of Jewish cultural music, planting trees and flowers on Tu Bishvat, and baking challah every Friday. Live entertainment is a staple at Garden of Palms, and that includes comedy, music, and dance.
We celebrate Shabbat each week with rabbinical guidance, and regularly host students from local Jewish elementary and high schools that have partnered with our senior living community. Residents also enjoy daily meals, snacks, and desserts all prepared from scratch in our certified kosher kitchen. Our menu offers all homemade selections, including delicious breads, noodle kugel, and potato latkes, along with desserts such as cannoli and lemon bars. And of course, we celebrate Jewish holidays alongside traditional foods such as slow-cooked cholent and mandelbrot.
